题目:THz Technology; Where is it Going?
摘要:
Since the early 1990s with the development of so called “time domain techniques” there has been an explosion of interest in what is now known as Terahertz technology, with extensive predictions of massive applications, which to date have only appeared to a very limitedextent. The talk will start by reviewing the nature of THz radiation and some of its interactions with materials. The relationship of THz research to the older fields of ‘far infrared’ or ‘sub millimetre’ research is explored, and it is shown that some things are not quite as new as is sometimes supposed! After reviewing some of the frequently quoted potential applications, the talk closes with a consideration of the way forward for THz science and technology - in particular, how will we find the THz ‘killer app’ which really becomes a major wide spread application?
Ps:The talk does not require prior knowledge of the THz region, and is accessible to anyone with a postgraduate level understanding of physics.
报告人简介:
Prof Harvey Rutt took his first degree at Southampton University in Electronics, followed by a PhD during which he constructed the first optical parametric oscillator to operate in the UK. He then moved to Brazil for some three years, helping to establish a new research group in the fields of solid state Raman spectroscopy and novel lasers. On his return to the UK he took up a post at the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority, working for some years on novel mid Infrared gas lasers for uranium isotope separation. This was followed by work on both visible lasers and negative ion beams. He ultimately became a Division head leading a wide variety of work including lightening strikes on aircraft. In 1992 Prof Rutt returned to Southampton University as Rank Professor of Infrared Science and technology. He established a small group working on mid Infraredand THz materials, devices and systems. In 2005 after a devastating fire he took over as Head of Electronics and Computer Science, and was responsible for overseeing the construction of a new clean room complex.
His research interests cover the generation, manipulation, applications and detection of infrared and terahertz radiation.
Whilst quite recently retired from his full time post, he remains research active and has strong research links to several Universities, including Tsinghua. Prof Rutt likes to lead an active life outside of his profession, he is a qualified amateur pilot, recently started flying gliders, is an experienced SCUBA diverand travels widely. Hiking in remote areas seeking alpine plants, and visitinglive volcanos, are particular interests.
Prof Rutt is a Fellowof the Royal Academy of Engineering(FREng), Fellow of The Optical Society of American(FOSA), Fellow of The Institute of Physic (FIoP) and Fellow of Institution of Engineering and Technology(FIET). he also is the Editor of the Elsevier Journal ‘Infrared Physics and Technology’.
